While the rest of the country stubs it out, at least in public, from October 2, in Mumbai you can carry on smoking. That’s because MCGM, which is supposed to implement the smoking ban, has thrown up its hands stating that it does not have the current infrastructure and manpower. Unfortunately Mumbai may not see the implementation of the Centre’s decision of banning smoking in public places as MCGM is yet to finalise on its basic procedures. Speaking in a press conference, MCGM Commissioner Dr. Jairaj Pathak has stated that the fine collected from smoking in public places would be put in its treasury. Additional Commissioner Kishore Gjabhiye has stated that receipt books would be issued to officers to book the culprit, unfortunately the civic body is still not sure when it would implement this Centre’s rule.
