Refuting the charge of nepotism, senior Congress leader and union minister Vilasrao Deshmukh today said that it was necessary to put up young candidates considering the “changing voters’ profile”. Vilasrao Deshmukh, whose own son Amit has been given Congress ticket from Latur for the assembly elections, was at pains to stress that very few Congress candiates have ‘family connection’. Apart from Amit Deshmukh, Union power minister Sushilkumar Shinde’s daughter Pranati, and president Pratibha Patil’s son Raosaheb Shekhawat have got tickets this time. However, Deshmukh, addressing a press conference here, said that they did not get tickets on the strength of their family background, but because of their “work”. When he was asked about prominent politicians’ children getting an easy entry into the politics, he said that changing voters’ profile has to be considered, and youth has to be given more representation.
