NMMC has a new Standing Committee Chairman – NCP’s dabang corporator Navin Gavte. A corporator whose track record includes an arrest in a serious criminal offense of selling illegal homes to buyers, who has had a look out notice issued in his name and who was arrested by the Navi Mumbai police for the same criminal offense of selling illegal homes in Digha on bogus paperwork and is now out on bail. As if this wasn’t enough, Navin Gavte’s hearing on his corporatorship is underway and NMMC Commisioner Dr Ramaswamy N is likely to take a decision on the same soon.

NAVIN GAVTE – A CORPORATOR WITH DUBIOUS CRIMINAL RECORD
With dubious credentials for having criminal cases, it came as an utter shock when NCP handpicked Navin Gavte to Chair NMMC’s Standing Committee, that too from the constituency of Airoli MLA Sandeep Naik in the crucial year of assembly elections. Side-lining strong contenders for the post, Navin Gavte became NMMC Standing Committee Chairman. Often in news for wrong reasons, than right, Navin Gavte was embroiled in the illegal construction controversy in Digha from where Gavte was elected corporator along with his wife Aparna Gavte and close relative Deepa Gavte.

NAVIN GAVTE CAN BE DISQUALIFIED
The case against the Gavte picked momentum when Tukaram Mundhe took charge as NMMC Commissioner. At that time Deputy Municipal Commissioner (Elections) and Deputy Civic Commissioner (Anti-Encroachment) were asked to prepare a report of the three NCP corporators — Naveen Gavte, Aparna Gavte and Deepa Gavte. The sword of disqualification continues to hang over these corporators who have either indulged in or have shielded unauthorised constructions in their ward. A circular issued by the law department of state government states that the municipal commissioner, unless and until there is a point of law which requires clarification, should act at his own level and decide on disqualification of tainted corporators. Hence, the ball now is in the court of the present NMMC Commissioner Dr Ramaswamy N.

NAVIN GAVTE BLACKMAILED TO REBEL TO SHIV SENA TO ATTAIN STANDING COMMITTEE CHAIRMANSHIP?
According to reliable sources of NCP and Shiv Sena, the criminal cases against Navin Gavte fractured his relationship with NCP’s Navi Mumbai leader Ganesh Naik and Airoli MLA Sandeep Naik. As Navin Gavte was spotted moving around with Sandeep Naik’s arch rival M K Madhvi during his arrest days, he also allegedly warmed up to the Shiv Sena leaders. As this is the year of elections, Navin Gavte was allegedly all set to switch from NCP to Shiv Sena, and this fear of losing a huge vote bank in Digha forced NCP leaders in Navi Mumbai to make Gavte Chairman of Standing Committee to appease him. Navin Gavte continues to remain in touch with Sena leaders and in fact also confessed to be meeting them for resolving the illegal construction issues in Digha.

NAVIN GAVTE FAILS TO UNDERSTAND HIS ROLE AS STANDING COMMITTEE CHAIRMAN
On day of taking charge as NMMC Standing Committee Chairman itself, Navin Gavte failed to understand the basic fact that he isn’t just Chairman for Digha but entire Navi Mumbai. This came to the fore, when in his reply to priorities as Standing Committee Chairman, Navin Gavte only listed work he wants to get done in his wards at Digha and had no clue about what he wanted to do for Navi Mumbai.

On the question that his corporatorship could be cancelled in the next hearing, causing loss to NCP in the year of crucial elections, Navin Gavte said that it does not matter as he will continue to work for people of Digha with or without any post.

NMMC Commissioner Dr Ramaswamy N is known as Mr Clean and Navin Gavte is officially a tainted corporator out on bail. Now it will be interesting to see how they team up in the NMMC Standing Committee to address and work for core issues of Navi Mumbai. Zeba Warsia – NMTV News.
