NCP President Sharad Pawar has already assessed the state’s political situation to his party’s advantage. After announcing its unconditional outside support to the BJP-led state government earlier, the party has now said it will give issue-based support.
Pawar said his party had offered unconditional support to BJP only for a stable government. “However, to keep the government stable is BJP’s duty, not ours. We will vote on the floor of House in favour of BJP on the basis of issues. If it takes anti-people stand and policies, we will vote against it. We will play the role of a constructive opposition,” he said..
The former union minister said, “Our support is not for five years anyway. If BJP does not work properly, NCP may withdraw its support at any moment. Pawar said Congress (42) and NCP (41) are not in a position to form government. “Therefore, NCP decided to support BJP. No one had asked us to, but we did it for stability and in the larger interest of the state.
Calling Pawar an astute politician, a political observer said, “He understands the situation very quickly and takes decisions accordingly. By announcing outside support to BJP earlier, NCP killed many birds with one stone. The party kept itself relevant by doing so, despite being fourth legislator-strength-wise. It will control the government even if it’s run by BJP. There will always be a sword hanging over the government.
