The Nationalist Congress Party won the post of the standing committee chairperson of the Navi Mumbai Municipal Corporation (NMMC).The Shiv Sena’s efforts to cause an upset and win the post like last time did not bear fruit as they lost out on the post. The NCP won the Congress’ support as Shubhangi Patil was elected chairperson of the standing committee. She defeated Rucha Patil of the Shiv Sena, securing nine votes against seven.
Daughter of a former Turbhe strongman, she is the second woman chairperson in the history of the NMMC standing committee. Congress corporator Mira Patil, who voted for the Shiv Sena candidate last year, went with the party order and voted for the NCP candidate this time. The Shiv Sena had planned to get the Congress vote and hoped to get lucky had there been a tie.
Mira Patil’s mentor, former Congress corporator Santosh Shetty, said that he would not support the NCP, but Mira decided to obey the party whip. The Shiv Sena tried hard to retain the post, but differences within the party are believed to have doomed its chances. Opposition leader Vijay Chougule weathered the opposition by getting Shiv Sena’s Vijay Nahata nominated to the committee along with another Shiv Sena corporator Namdeo Bhagat.
A political observer said, “The top Shiv Sena leaders had been in the running for the post, however, when it was finally clear that they will not win, they backed off. Rucha Patil was then declared a candidate.”
