Independent candidate, Pratibha Chatne’s nomination was rejected during initial scrutiny, leaving the deck clear for the remaining three candidates, who will contest the bypoll in ward number, 88, on January 10.
Chatne’s nomination was rejected well before the last date for withdrawal of candidature on December 28, ensuring a triangular contest between Saraswati Patil of the Sena-BJP-RPI alliance, Shilpa Kambli from NCP and Nutan Raut from Congress.
According to political observers, the contest will be quite tough for ruling NCP, which is trying to retain the seat won by the late corporator, Shashikala Maladi in the April 22 election.
NCP is determined to go separately and win the election. However, Congress, which had finished second last time is optimistic of improving its voting share. The grand alliance of Sena-BJP-RPI is also hoping to tilt the scale in its favour.
