NMMC CONTRACTOR BLATANTLY DUMPS WASTE IN OPEN CITY NALLAHS DE-SILTED EARLIER THIS YEAR – CRIMINAL WASTAGE OF PUBLIC FUNDS

open-nallahs-3While the NMMC Commissioner is striving to ensure that open city nallahs are de-silted, his sub ordinates are doing otherwise. Navi Mumbai News camera lenses captured contractors of NMMC dumping mud and waste removed from sites of old STP plants into open city nallahs. The concerned NMMC official however, is defending the contractor and attempting to misguide the media. Prior to the monsoons this year, NMMC has begun the de-silting work of open nallahs in the city to ensure that if there is another 26/7 deluge to hit the city, flooding does not take place. This drive was conducted under the supervision of the NMMC Commissioner Madhukar Kokate. (SHOW VISUALS FROM WEDNESDAY, 17TH MAY 2006 – ENGLISH). And now, let’s take a look what NMMC contractors are doing after a few months. The old STP plants in the city are being converted into hi-tech STPs. Waste collected from the old STP sites are being collected in dumpers and is being dumped in the open nallahs at Vashi. The contractor is dumping hundreds of dumpers of waste in the open nallah at Vashi. Shockingly, it is being done with consent from NMMC officials. While any other authority would penalize the contractor for indulging in such irresponsible and marine environment damaging act, this particular contractor seems to be getting biased treatment by NMMC officials. Not just in Vashi, similar scenario is witnessed at the Nerul STP plants and open nallah there. When Navi Mumbai News Correspondent Rajeev Mishra approached the contractor and asked him if they had procured permission for dumping the waste in the open nallahs, they had nothing to say in their defense. NMMC officials at the site of STP plants panicked and demanded that the camera being taken outside and disallowed shooting endorsing that there are violations taking place here. NMMC PWD Executive Engineer on the other hand does have an explanation. He says that the open nallahs are being filled as they will soon be covered and converted into parking places and shopping complexes. Ask him the logic of clearing the open nallahs early this year after spending Crores of Rupees and then filling them again, isn’t this criminal wastage of public taxes and he does not have an answer. When quested why the contractor did not procure permission before doing this, and again Surinder Patil told our Correspondent that “not everything needs to written permissions.”
