NMMC General body meet adjourned over Turbhe dumping ground

The NMMC general body meeting on Thursday witnessed pandemonium over the demand of shifting the Turbhe dumping ground. It was adjourned by mayor Sudhakar Sonawane.

Sonawane will lead a delegation of corporators and civic officials to meet revenue minister Chandrakant Patil on Friday to get the file for dumping ground plot cleared.

Turbhe’s NCP corporator Suresh Kulkarni, who has threatened to resign over the issue, has said he would not allow the general body to function if the dumping ground is not shifted soon.

Kulkarni had earlier declared that he would protest in the general body meeting despite his party being the ruling party in the house.

As soon as the proceedings began, Kulkarni and four other corporators raised the issue.

Soon, corporators cutting across party lines joined in. The corporators rushed to the well of the house with several climbing the stairs to the podium where the mayor along with the deputy mayor and the commissioner were seated.

With the corporators not allowing the house to proceed, Sonanwane announced that the meeting was adjourned and that he would lead a delegation to the minister to clear the dumping ground file.

Later, Sonawane said, “The dumping ground file sent to mantralaya has been signed by the revenue secretary and is awaiting signature of the revenue minister.”

He asid, “We will meet him on Friday and request for early clearance.”
