After an uproar over the dome of Babasaheb Ambedkar Memorial being constructed in Airoli a few months ago, the Navi Mumbai Municipal Corporation has agreed to make the dome out of marble.
Municipal commissioner N Ramaswamy has ordered the NMMC engineering department to start the tender process for marble cladding of the memorial dome.
The decision came following a meeting with mayor Sudhakar Sonawane.
Former municipal commissioner Tukaram Mundhe had cancelled the marble cladding, citing environmental issues and instead planned painting of the dome.
The IIT report had stated that the creek surrounding was not suitable for marble cladding. The decision was opposed by many.
Work on the memorial at Sector 15 has been on for years.
Sonawane said, “I recently met the municipal commissioner Ramaswamy and apprised him of the situation and the sentiments of the people. I explained that cost is not a factor when it comes to creating something for Dr Babasaheb Ambedkar.”
