Palm Beach road is known as the Queen’s Necklace of Navi Mumbai. While earlier lush green trees and plants used to greet the vehicle plying through this road, today it’s a sorry state of affairs, but looks like the authorities could not care less. We always hear stories of how CIDCO was always a better caretaker than NMMC of Navi Mumbai and the present condition of Palm Beach Road is an example of this. Handed over to NMMC by CIDCO not over a year ago, the foliage on the Palm Beach Road divider is in a pathetic state due to NMMC’s neglect. Due to neglect on the maintenance front, the greenery comprising of majestic Royal Palm Trees and red coloured decorative shrubs are in a sorry state. The leaves of several trees have dried up and fallen down, thereby presenting a shabby look. The shrubs on the other hand are infested with parasites and there is a wild growth of grass as well as wild plants along the entire stretch. The foliage on the road divider is in a pathetic state was due to the neglect by NMMC, say environmentalist. In the absence of proper watering, the leaves have completely dried up with many even uprooted from the median. Due to lack of regular upkeep lot of wild grass has grown along the divider. When we tried to speak with NMMC Commissioner Vijay Nahata on this issue, he directed us to the administration officer of the civic tree department Chandrakant Tayade. Our team then visited the office of Chandrakant Tayade who was also unavailable for comment as he was busy with a function at Vashi.
