If all goes well as planned by the civic body, around 2,200 students studying in balwadis run by NMMC will be dressed in school uniforms, sponsored by the civic body. The proposal to that effect has been passed by the NMMC’s Education Committee in a meeting held on May 29. This year the balwadi students of NMMC would be receiving uniforms, books and raincoats sponsored by NMMC. Presently, NMMC runs 60 balwadis which have around 2,200 students. These students are mostly from slums, gaothan areas and those from Low Income Group (LIG) families. NMMC has passed a proposal to buy school uniforms for these students and each student will be provided with two pairs of uniforms and NMMC will bear an expenditure of Rs 36 lakh. The tender for the same will be floated, inviting reputed firms and agencies to supply of branded material for uniforms. He further informed that in order to improve the quality of education at the balwadis, it has been proposed to extend the working period of balwadi teachers from June to April. Presently, it is from June to March. However, the principal of NMMC school no.23 at Koperkhairne Vijaya Jawale informed that they were yet to receive all the materials from the NMMC.
