No matter how many laws and rules are brought in for its protection, mangrove destruction continues in Navi Mumbai. This time reports are coming in from the Gharonda society in Ghansoli where alleged destruction of mangroves is being down by land mafia. Be it the Environment Protection Act, the rules and laws farmed for the protection of mangroves, the NMMC laws for conservation of mangroves or CIDCO’s Wetland Centre, each one aim at the same thing, to protect mangrove in the city. However, time and again reports of mangrove destruction continue to be reported. Sometimes from CBD, sometimes Kamothe, sometimes Vashi and now Ghansoli where openly mangroves are being destroyed in broad daylight. We are talking about the area of Ghansoli close to Gharonda complex where mangrove destruction has been reported from a 4 acre land close to the creek. However over here continuously debris is being dumped with the clear intention of creating open plots by destroying mangroves so that the prime land can be commercially exploited and locals alleged that this is being done in nexus with local politicians. The fearless way in which this truck is dumping debris here exposes that not only are they not scared of being caught for doing this crime but they have the blessings of local authorities and politicians. Unfortunately, all these environment violations continue to be reported from the constituency for the State Environment Minister Ganesh Naik. And blame for this goes to his corporators and party workers who form the ruling front in Navi Mumbai but miserably fail to do justice to environment.
