The King of Saudi Arabia, Kind Abdullah has announced that women can now cast their votes and even run for municipal elections. The women would also have the right to get appointed to the consultative Shura Council.
Unlike other Middle East countries, Saudi Arabia has much stricter laws for women. While hijaab is a compulsion, women were not permitted to have any active participation in the kingdom or had the freedom to exercise their rights. The decision of the King has been welcomed by activists.
Even though municipal councils have little power, this decision is being seen as a big step towards political reform in Saudi Arabia.
