A government resolution declaring Panvel Municipal Corporation (PMC) was issued on Friday after the governor gave his consent to the formation of the body.
As per the GR, the municipal corporation will come into existence from October 1.
The GR was issued by state government deputy secretary Sudhakar Shinde.
The PMC that has been formed on the basis of 2011 census will comprise 32 villages apart from Panvel city area and have a population of 5,09,901.
The announcement has led to discussion among the political circles and residents on the changes that will now take place in the region.
Atul Jaitpal, a Panvel resident, said: “It is good that the corporation is finally coming into existence. It however remains to be seen what difference it will make to Panvel area.”
He added, “Despite being located next to Navi Mumbai, development has lagged here. Hopefully with larger area and more funds, things will improve. There is a lot of excitement and one is praying that our hopes are not dashed.”
The United Kharghar Action committee has stated that it will continue to fight to exclude Kharghar from PMC jurisdiction. It has filed a PIL in the high court demanding an independent corporation for Kharghar.
The Taloja Manufactures Association too has been opposing inclusion in the proposed PMC wanting to remain under MIDC jurisdiction.
