Brace yourself for more power cuts in the coming months. From October, the shortfall between the city’s demand and supply would increase from the existing 300 Mw to 600 Mw. The situation in Thane, Navi Mumbai and Pune is likely to get worse. An official from Tata Power Company has stated that they expect at least four to five hours of power cuts in Thane and Pune. Tata Power is presently trying to tackle the power crisis in Pune, which faces two hours of power cuts every day. TPC also supplies bulk power to Mumbai through BEST (city) and Reliance Infrastructure Ltd (suburbs). Buying electricity has become an expensive option and companies may refrain from doing so. The power crisis is likely to aggravate in the coming months if companies are forced to buy power at prevailing market rates. The Maharashtra Electricity Regulatory Commission will hold a meeting today to address this issue.
