PRIME MINISTER TO TAKE THE FINAL CALL ON NAVI MUMBAI INTL’ AIRPORT BUT THINGS AREN’T LOOKING AFFIRMATIVE

Airport---4The fate of the Navi Mumbai airport still hangs in balance and this time it would be the Prime Minister’s Office to look into the clearance for the proposed site. Moreover with the Prime Minister himself having the department of Environment Ministry, the final call will be taken by them. Some more inputs were given by CIDCO JMD Deepak Kapoor to NMTV News. While the Navi Mumbai International Airport has not received the clearance from the Environment Ministry for the proposed site identified for the second airport in Mumbai, the ministry of civil aviation has referred the proposal to the Prime Minister’s Office (PMO). The PMO, along with Maharashtra chief minister Vilasrao Deshmukh and the principal secretary of the state is expected to clear the hurdles in the way of the second airport, within a month. It may be recalled that the destruction of mangroves due to reclamation of land, the environment ministry had refused to provide clearance for the Navi Mumbai airport proposal. Ironically, the Union Environment Ministry that rejected the proposal is with headed by Prime Minister Dr. Manmohan Singh. And now the CM and his brigade of airport promoters are going to meet him for clearing the project. It may be recalled that the CIDCO JMD Deepak Kapoor had spoken in length about the center’s rejection about the airport site and assured they will get the clearance too. The project, if gets the final nod, is likely to cost about Rs 9,970 crore in various phases of development. The existing airport in Mumbai is expected to reach complete saturation level by 2013 and hence a second airport is required. Bureau report – NMTV
