The Board of Approvals for SEZs deferred a decision on Reliance Industries’ proposal to set up a special economic zone at Navi Mumbai while clearing 17 other SEZs. While Reliance had originally proposed the SEZ over 10,000 acres, the government subsequently capped the size of individual SEZs at 5,000 acres. A decision was held back in the first meeting due to certain issues relating to the construction of road and railway lines in the SEZ. The board is awaiting a detailed report on the same and once the report is furnished, they would be taken up. Government sources said the revenue department also wanted to confirm if the steps proposed by Reliance to prevent possible revenue loss through these transit routes were adequate.
