Residents movement prompts closure of two polluting units at Koperkhairne

Citizen initiative by residents of new Sector 11 Koperkhairne worked wonders in arresting pollution and led to strong action by the MPCB that closed down two polluting units. The residents, who had been crying hoarse for over one year got peace but not before a gruelling fight with rounds of meetings and even ”lobbying hard among senior IAS officers in Mantralaya.”

┬áSaurabh Pandya, president of the resident association informed that ”Senior officers moved around incognito on bikes with us to take a round of the Pawane industrial area during the night to take stock of the foul odour emanating that was similar to the smell from the nala flowing from our area.” E mail to the PMO, chief minister’s office by the residents early January this year led to a scare and there was no discharge in the nala for some six months.

“We heaved a sigh of relief as the nullah water did not change colour and were spared of the foul odour, but last few months once again the discharge started. We then met the member secretary, MPCB and told him that this time we would involve the national green tribunal also. We were heard and thank the RO, Mohekar.”
