Sporadic Incidents Of Violence Mark Maratha Bandh In Maharashtra

Maratha outfits have called for a bandh in Maharashtra today. The bandh comes in wake of the suicide of a man demanding reservation for the community. He jumped to his death in a river in Aurangabad district.

Maratha leaders are demanding an apology from Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis apologizes. Their demands include reservation in government jobs and education.

While Maratha leaders called for a peaceful bandh, activists resorted to violence to impose a complete bandh. Protests sat on railway tracks, stopped trains and buses, even rickshaws and in some cases pelted stones at tempos and BEST buses.

Shopkeepers downed shutters in all eight districts of Marathwada. Protesters pelted on BEST buses near Ghansoli while BEST called of services from Airoli to Vashi completely for the day. Schools across Navi Mumbai, Thane and Kalyan remained shut as parents were asked not to send students to school. Heavy police security were deployed across the state.
