Candidates can withdraw their names by December 28, which will be followed by allocation of poll symbol and release of list of polling booths on December 30. The results will be declared on January 11.

This by-election will test NCP leader Ganesh Naik’s strength, while facing stiff opposition from Shiv Sena-BJP alliance in the house. Maladi, who was NCP’s candidate, had won the last poll by a margin of 567 votes over her Congress rival Nutan Digambar Raut.

According to political observers, a defeat will be costly for NCP , as it is walking on a tightrope in the house in terms of numbers.
