Maharashtra education minister Radhakrishna Vikhe-Patil asserted that the government was adamant about reserving 90% junior college seats for SSC students and a final decision will be taken in a day or two. Maharashtra education minister Radhakrishna Vikhe-Patil also said that the government will give a no-objection certificate immediately to CBSE and ICSE schools wanting to start junior colleges from the current academic year. Patil was replying to a point raised by Shiv Sena’s Deepak Sawant in the legislative council. Bharatiya Janata Party’s Vinod Tawde wanted a caveat filed in the high court to prevent legal hurdles to the proposal. However, the decision to go ahead with 90% reservation is likely to be challenged in court as the step would be more pushing the education system backward rather than updating its curriculum and making it competitive.
