STATE INTELLIGENCE COMMISSIONER ANIL DHERE REPLACES D SIVANANDAN FOR THE POST OF THANE POLICE COMMISSIONER

d-shivndan-2The Thane Police Commissioner D Sivanandan was transferred from his post. The transfer is being termed as an odd turn of events considering the fact that such a senior officer has been transferred in the thick of the Thane by-election campaigning. The by-poll is due on May 22 in which the city will witness a direct strike between Shiv Sena’s Anand Paranjape and the Congress-NCP’s Sanjeev Naik. It is being reported that the Sena-BJP alliance had expressed their fears to the state election commission that Sivanandan was “close” to the Nationalist Congress Party, implying that Sanjeev Naik may have an unfair advantage because of that. Reliable sources reveal that the transfer of the top police officer was due to the political pressure from Sena on the one hand and differences within the NCP ahead of the crucial by-election. Last fortnight, Sena leader Subash Desai led a delegation to election commission to complain against Sivanandan’s inaction against atrocities allegedly inflicted on Sena-BJP workers in Navi Mumbai and Thane by environment minister (and father of Sanjeev Naik) Ganesh Naik and his supporters, after which they urged the commission to intervene and ensure free and fair elections.” We spoke with noth the officers about the new post. After delimitation of seats, Thane has become a crucial battle ground as the number of assembly segments here have doubled from 13 to 26. Both Sena and NCP wants to firm up their hold in the district by winning this Lok Sabha seat to consolidate for the bigger battle in the assembly elections due in 2009. Bureau report NMTV
