State issues fresh rules and regulations for issuing new permits to auto rickshaw and taxi drivers

The state government on Tuesday issued fresh rules and regulations for issuing new permits to auto rickshaw and taxi drivers.

In a government resolution issued on Tuesday, the government said fresh permit seekers need to have a valid licence and badge from the Regional Transport Office (RTO), and they need to obtain a character certificate from the local police station, showing that they have a clean criminal record.

The GR also states that applicants for auto and taxi permits should file an affidavit stating that he or she is not employed with any government or semi-government organization, private company or any organized sector organisation. The applicant also needs to file an affidavit that he or she does not have a taxi or auto permit for any another vehicle.

The new rules specify that only autos and taxis that run on CNG, LPG or electricity will be given permits in the Mumbai Metropolitan Region, Pune, and Pimpri-Chinchwad municipal jurisdictions. Autos that run on other fuels will be given permits in other municipal corporations.

The new regulations also specify that only those applying for auto rickshaw and taxi permits will be required to follow the rules, while old autos don’t have to renew their permits.

The rules also state that if the state directs so, it will be mandatory for permit holders to install GPS, GPRS connectivity and RFID tags in their autos and taxis.

The GR also mandates that all electrical autos will be given permits only if they have meters.
