The Supreme Court today asked the Centre and state governments to shut down all liquor shops within 500 mtr of national and state highways  from 1st April.

A bench headed by Chief Justice T.S. Thakur passed the order on a batch of petitions filed by an NGO promoting road safety.

The Apex court bench headed by Chief Justice TS Thakur, however, said that they can operate till March 31, 2017. No renewal of their licenses would be made thereafter.

These decisions are taken in order to end rising drunk and driving cases in the country. The bench also came down heavily on the Centre for not stepping-in to solve the problem of drinking and driving and not taking any concrete measures
