Navi Mumbai’s first skywalk has been inaugurated at Diva village. The skywalk, that has come up in the constituency of MLA Sandeep Naik was inaugurated in a ceremony at hands of Thane Guardian Minister Ganesh Naik. The skywalk, the makers say will reduce accidents at the spot and has been designed to make it commuter friendly.
After Mumbai’s ambitious skywalks, Navi Mumbai gets its first at Diva. Inaugurated at the hands of Thane Guardian Minister Ganesh Naik in a glittering ceremony, the skywalk has come up at Diva Koliwada chowk and Diva Nagar. The inauguration was done in the presence of MP Dr. Sanjeev Naik, Airoli MLA Sandeep Naik, Mayor Sagar Naik, NMMC Commissioner Bhaskar Wankhede and others. The guests toured the skywalk after the inauguration.
Though the first in Navi Mumbai, the skywalk has already been the subject of much talks and visits by experts for the innovations made within the design and structure of the skywalk for making it commuter friendly. The spot at Diva was chosen because it is has industries, railway stations and residential areas located nearby and saw a lot of pedestrian movement of employees and local residents, especially women and children. There were several instances of fatal mishaps in this spot. Most of them were pedestrians who were trying to cross the road. In order to reduce the road mishaps, locals had demanded for a skywalk in the region. The skywalk has been constructed by contractor M/s Das Offshore Ltd. Company at a cost of Rs. 3 Crore 36 lacs 35 thousand. Speaking to the media, Thane Guardian Minister Ganesh Naik voiced happiness over the work done in making the contract. He said that in future he’d want skywalks that are elderly and disabled friendly too. Airoli MLA Sandeep Naik too inspected the skywalk.
Speaking to the media, MLA Sandeep Naik said that this was a 5-entry skywalk that was designed different from existing skywalks. He added that they would ensure that the skywalk was maintained through revenue from advertisements.
