For decades now, the redevelopment issue of CIDCO built apartments and regularization of structures in gaonthan areas in the city has been hanging in the balance. Every election brings new hopes and new promises for the apartment owners and villagers, but all assurances fizz out soon after the elections. The issue has once again surfaced after Thane Guardian Minister Ganesh Naik appealed to the Chief Minister Ashok Chavan to speed up a decision on this. While a case against the same was pending in court, the issue has also become who-gets-the-credit kind of a game. This is Thane Guardian Minister Ganesh Naik appealing to the Chief Minister Ashok Chavan to render justice to the apartment owners living in CIDCO built buildings in Navi Mumbai in conditions that can easily be termed as unfit for human occupancy. The Thane Guardian Minister Ganesh Naik informed the Chief Minister that there has been a lot of talk about Dharavi pattern but the present condition of CIDCO buildings in the city is highly dilapidated and regularization of structures in gaonthan areas too is very serious. Ganesh Naik said that the issue has been pending for a decision in the Chief Minister’s office for a long time and appealed that the CM Ashok Chavan to take a call on it soon. While Chief Minister Ashok Chavan replied to all the issues raised by all the speakers during the event, he did not respond to the FSI issue at all. Reliable sources reveal that this is because any positive assurance on it would directly benefit the NCP party in Navi Mumbai. And this is one of the reasons why the state has been stalling a decision on the FSI issue for Navi Mumbai for a long time. This fight for who-gets-credit became more apparent when the media questioned the Chief Minister Ashok Chavan about the FSI issue for CIDCO built apartments and gaonthan areas, and the Chief Minister, ignoring Thane Guardian Minister Ganesh Naik, instead said that it was Congress corporator Ramakant Mhatre who had brought the issue to his attention and assured to take a decision on it soon. Even as politicians continue to make fresh assurances prior to every election, the apartment owners living in CIDCO built buildings are a grieved lot. And no points for guessing that they too have little faith in the promises politicians make on the eve of elections. Clearly in the midst of who will walk away with the credit of one of the most burning issues of FSI in Navi Mumbai, the end citizens continue to live nightmarish lives.
