An aid of Rs.4 Crores has been granted by the centre to NMMC for making a trauma center. NMMC would be developing a state-of-the-art trauma centre. Monika Bhosale has the details. The Central Health and Social Welfare Dept. has granted NMMC with an aid of Rs. 4 Crores for establishing a Trauma Centre at the municipal hospital at Vashi. Sources from the health department at NMMC informed that the Center has granted the aid to NMMC for modernization of the hospital and to establish a trauma centre. NMMC Commissioner Vijay Nahata informed that the work for the trauma centre had already started in full force and that it would be completed within 1.5 months. Despite being a huge hospital with capacity to accommodate 500 beds, the hospital has 300 beds. However, till date there has been no trauma centre in municipal hospital. Looking at the number of accidents happening at Mumbai Pune Highway, Sion-Panvel highway, Thane – Belapur Road and Palm Beach road, there definitely is a need of a trauma center at the municipal hospital. But if the past record of the hospital is any indication, it will not be a surprise if the funds meant for a trauma center too end up being pocketed by vested interest than utilized for the purpose.
