Two senior officials of the Mumbai Metropolitan Region Development Authority including an IAS officer, have been booked for culpable homicide not amounting to murder in connection with the death of a person during a demolition drive. The MMRDA has defended its officials, saying they couldnt be singled out for the accidental death. The Police had registered the case at Kurla against additional metropolitan commissioner Milind Mhaiskar and resettlement and rehabilitation chief Vandana Suryavanshi after the Kurla metropolitan magistrates court issued an order on December 17.The other charges slapped on the two officials include house trespass, wrongful restraint, disobeying the law, and negligence. Baliram Thorat, the complainant, had approached the court after the police allegedly refused to register his complaint. The residents had alleged that Suryavanshi visited the Tarabai Compound in Kurla and told the residents to vacate their houses within a day. The locality comes in the way of the under-construction Santa Cruz-Chembur Link Road, a project being implemented by the Maharashtra State Road Development Corporation (MSRDC) and supervised by the MMRDA. MMRDA officials, escorted by local policemen had razed the houses using bulldozers. A wall fell on Shankar Balla, one of the residents, and he died of his injuries later in the day. The residents decided to go to court. We also tried to speak with senior police inspector Vijay Bagwe of the Kurla police station who refused to comment on camera but stated that they have initiated an inquiry and will take necessary action.
