The Vashi Sessions Court sentenced a truck driver to 45 days of imprisonment for drunk driving. Nearly a week ago, Suresh Vange a drunken truck driver had crashed into a Maruti car at APMC Market. The traffic police arrested the driver and booked under Motor Vehicle Act Sections 184 and 185. When the accused was presented in the Vashi Court, the judge sentenced him to 45 days of imprisonment. While this is not the first case of drunken driving, the sentences pronounced to the driver are rare and welcome to discourage the practice of irresponsible and reckless driving. ACP Nandkumar Chougele informed that in the last 3 months, the traffic police have booked 1839 for violating traffic rules and earned revenue of Rs. 3, 51, 800 as penalty. 134 cases of drunk driving too have been recorded in the same period and the fine collected against these cases has been Rs. 1, 71, 800. The Navi Mumbai Traffic Police has managed the good figures despite having only 2 speed guns and 1 alcohol breath analyzer. ACP Chougele says that instead of the present law, if a strict law is put into place for traffic violations, speed breaking and drunk driving, it would help reduce road accidents. For the time being, the traffic police are trying to make most of the act of canceling licenses of traffic violators. With cameraperson Abhay Prasad, Sudhir Sharma for Navi Mumbai News.
