Navi Mumbai boasts of its own Morbe Dam and we often hear of credit taken by all political parties for giving Navi Mumbai 24 hours water supply. While this could be a possibility because the city owns a dam, but it’s definitely not the reality. In the last Standing Committee meeting, members of both ruling party and opposition came down heavily on the administration for erratic to no water supply for days across Navi Mumbai. And the worst affected are areas that are home to citizens hailing from economically weaker backgrounds. Ironically, water scarcity complaints surfaced when NCP firebrand Corporator Divya Gaikwad took up the issue of water wastage in her ward. Incidentally, there are two water tanks of CIDCO era in Sector 3 & 5, Vashi that are reportedly facing water leakage for nearly 2 years now. Divya Gaikwad lost her cool on the administration demanding that citizens now question her why NMMC does not practice what it preaches on saving water.
NCP Corporator Devidas Hande Patil then took up the issue of water problems being faced by citizens living in Koperkhairne, Rabale and Airoli.
The Chairman joined the chorus of his colleagues and attacked the administration for neglecting the water issues in his ward for the last 2 years. He informed the house that he has threatened the Commissioner of a morcha.
He informed the house that some officials say that unless the Standing Committee does not take up proposals of the administration, the administration would not take up their proposals.
Highlighting water issues in his area and slum settlements in the city, Shivram Patil pointed out that while they have been hearing 24/7 water supply for years, all citizens need is 2 hours of water supply everyday.
He said that next general body meeting is practically the last one until October and hence, the proposal related to water supply should be taken up in the monthly general body meeting of March.
Seeing the backlash of corporators, the administration reluctantly assured the members that they will bring proposal for water supply issues in the next general body meeting.
Both NCP and Shiv Sena leaders have been boasting of regular water supply in the city to their credit at the cost of Rs 1000 Crore Morbe Dam in almost every election for years but now their own party corporators exposed and put on record that despite the hundreds of Crores tax payers money spent, water scarcity & shortages continues to haunt daily lives of the common man in Navi Mumbai.
