The Home Minister R R Patil minced no words as he said that suspended top cop Bipin Bihari reaped what he had sown. He was speaking to the media during the state assembly session. It may be recalled that the state home department suspended 13 police officers involved in framing builder Rajendra Chaturvedi under false charges. State police chief AN Roy had given the suspension order. The suspended officers include former additional commissioner of police Bipin Bihari, who had arrested Chaturvedi last March under false charges of trying to kill Chaturvedi’s business rival, builder Rashmikant Shah. After getting bail, Chaturvedi had moved the State Human Rights Commission alleging that he had been framed. The case was handed over to the Criminal Investigation Department. Investigations revealed that Chaturvedi’s arrest was hatched by Shah, under pressure from Addtl. Commissioner of Police Bihari. The report exposed how money plays a big role in Mumbai Police and how the police are capable of proving an innocent man guilty of any charge according to their whims and fancies. When the media spoke to Home Minister R R Patil about this, he said that IPS Bipin Bihari has been punished for his own deeds but saying that the Mumbai Police was corrupt is unjust. While the Home Minister goes defensive, there is little doubt about that fact that after scams like Telgi, proved linked of a few officials with the underworld and now the Chaturvedi case, the image of the Mumbai Police in the eyes of the common man has maligned to a large extent.
